Overview

The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office maintains a policy of zero-tolerance for all forms of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and consensual sexual contact among the inmate population or between staff, volunteers and contractors with the inmate population.

 

The Chesapeake Correctional Center has policy to ensure referrals of allegations for investigation and will ensure that an administrative or criminal investigation is completed for all allegations of sexual abuse and sexual harassment.  It is the policy of the Chesapeake Correctional Center to notify the Chesapeake Police Department of any allegation of sexual abuse or sexual harassment in order to conduct criminal investigations.  All allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment referred to the Chesapeake Police Department will be documented.  Allegations that do not involve potentially criminal behavior will be investigated by the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office.  In the event allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment are referred to the Chesapeake Police Department for criminal investigation, there are specific responsibilities to be assigned.

First, The Chesapeake Police Department will be responsible for all aspects of the criminal investigation.  Next, The Chesapeake Correctional Center shall act as first responders and coordinate response between the security staff, first responders, medical, mental health, and the Chesapeake Police Department.  In addition, The Chesapeake Sheriff's Office will provide medical and mental health practitioners and emergency services if required to ensure the preservation of evidence until turned over to the Chesapeake Police Department. The Chesapeake Sheriff's Office will initiate required documentation and notify appropriate authorities. The Chesapeake Sheriff's Office will ensure the separation of the victim and perpetrator and safety of the victim. We will provide assistance to the Chesapeake Police Department as needed.
